As a result, some experts in the field are steering away from the term altogether. But I like the term. I think it’s filled with meaning and can see why Tom Peters (business guru) coined the term a decade ago. What Is Branding? To get you clear, let’s first look at this from a purely marketing point of view, since that’s where this term came from. Wiki defines branding as: “Name, term, design, symbol, or any other feature that identifies one sellers goods or service as distinct from those of other sellers.”People engaged in branding seek to develop or align the expectations behind their brand experience, creating the impression that a brand associated with a product or service has certain qualities or characteristics that make it special or unique. In other words, when you see a McDonald s and eat at a McDonalds, you think of certain visual images, as well as a consistent eating experience and environment. You’re very clear this isn’t going to be a fine dining experience; you know what to expect. That’s what branding does for the buyer. It helps them know where to go to have a specific product or service and experience. How Do You Make Branding Personal? To translate that for your usage, personal branding is what identifies you from another person and what other people can expect when “experiencing” or being with you. In the work context, it’s your work reputation and what people come to value about you. Your personal brand is unique to you. There’s no one else out there with the same constellation of skills and personal behaviors you have. Granted, there may be others with greater expertise than you, but we aren’t talking about a comparison when it comes to personal branding; we’re talking about only you and how you are viewed by others. For example, let’s look at Oprah’s personal brand. Visually, Oprah wears color and smiles. You see pictures of her touching and making contact with people. In her work, her focus is on being curious about the world, supporting the best in others and personal development. You could say many other things about what we expect out of her and how we experience her. All of that is consistent and clear to those of us watching her. We’d all be shocked if she suddenly got cranky and negative. To summarize your personal brand: It’s unique to you. It’s your reputation. It’s how others experience you and what they value about you. It’s what others expect and seek you out for. It’s also what YOU want to be known for. Why Does Personal Branding Matter? With those things in mind, now the big question is: Why is awareness of your personal brand important to your career? Here are 3 very good reasons: 1. If you’re aware of your personal brand and it’s consistent with your career goals, you want to reinforce it so people very clearly understand what you’re all about. Check out her review of her alma mater: VT: Describe the campus setting and transportation options.How urban or safe is the campus?Are there buses or do you need a car/bike? Lena: Boston University is located in the heart of Boston. Fenway Park, the Charles River, and Kenmore Square are a short walking distance away. I would describe the campus as very safe with many resources that provide around-the-clock protection for students. The university has its own shuttle bus system; however, the iconic T Train is a very reliable transportation source. Cars are entirely unnecessary as the T, and readily accessible cabs, will take you anywhere you need to go. Many students bike from place to place as well. VT: How available are the professors, academic advisers, and teaching assistants? Lena: Classes can be quite large at Boston University, and this can be intimidating. However, professors and TAs are very helpful. Academic advisors are always available and willing to discuss your academic career during and after your time at the university. VT: How would you describe the dorm life rooms, dining options, location, socialization opportunities with other students? Lena: Boston University has many dining halls throughout the campus. Each one is unique and equally delicious. Boston University also has a variety of living situations, ranging from dorms to apartments. Living in the Boston University dorms really did spoil me a bit. The John Hancock Student Village is honestly the best dorm living I have ever experienced. Everything is new and up to date, and the maintenance staff is very responsive to any problems there may be. The security at each dorm is another plus when living in the city. VT: Which majors/programs are best represented and supported?What did you study and why? Did the university do a good job supporting your particular area of study? Lena: I studied Biology at Boston University. Other popular and well-known colleges at the university include the School of Management and the School of Communications. Each college was very well represented and supported. The university also provided multiple study abroad opportunities crafted for each area of study. I personally studied abroad in Ecuador with the Tropical Ecology Program. VT: How easy or difficult was it for you to meet people and make friends as a freshman? Does Greek life play a significant role in the campus social life? Lena: Although freshmen dorms are not the nicest of the dorms at Boston University, the experience is truly extraordinary. The bonds made during those first semesters are strong. If that is not enough, there are hundreds of different university groups and activities where you can meet people. I was also a member of TriDelta while I attended Boston University. If you decide to join in on Greek life, it is very prominent. However, I never felt that you would have to be a part of Greek life to be social. VT: How helpful is the Career Centerand other student support services?Do many reputable companies recruit on campus? Lena: There are many recruiting events and networking events sponsored by the university. Also, Boston is home to a large amount of colleges and universities that open their recruiting events to everyone. VT: How are the various study areas such aslibraries, the student union, and dorm lounges? Are they over-crowded, easily available, spacious? Lena: There is one major library called Mugar. It is very large and I never had a problem finding space. Each university building has multiple study areas that are accessible to everyone. The George Sherman Union is a large area that includes many spaces to sit and socialize, or to study, and includes a few options for food. VT: Describe the surrounding town. What kinds of outside establishments / things to do are there that make it fun, boring, or somewhere in between?To what extent do students go to the downtown area of the city versus staying near campus? Lena: As I said before, Boston University is in the heart of Boston. There is always something to do. Whether it is sponsored by the university, or entirely unrelated to anything in school, there is never a dull night. VT: How big or small is the student body? Were you generally pleased or displeased with the typical class sizes? Lena: The student body is very large. This can seem intimidating. I battled with the decision of attending a smaller school. I ended up choosing Boston University because of the amazing opportunities the university applies to its students. I learned to love the large student body and could not have seen my undergraduate experience any other way. The average class size when I first attended was 19. However, it really depends on what you are studying. Most introductory classes are quite large. My Introductory Biology class consisted of about 200 students. As you increase in specificity or difficulty, the class size decreases. VT: Describe one memorable experience with a professor and/or class. Perhaps one you loved the most or one youregretthe most. Lena: I have to say my first memorable experience at Boston University occurred before I was an official student. I attended the Accepted Students Day and was being shown a presentation on the study abroad experiences at Boston University. As a small town girl, realizing I could live in some of the most remote places in the world and call it school was incredible. Trade your time If unexpected events arise that impact the study schedule encourage your child to trade time instead of simply missing a study session. Find ways to adjust the schedule. Many students find that using one of the three weekend nights as a reserve study session provides enough time to make up missed studying. Create an organizational system No two organization systems for studying are alike. Some students prefer organizing everything digitally on a laptop or tablet, others rely on a folder and binder system, and some may choose hanging file folders in a caddy for organization. Give your child the freedom to find a system that works but provide support in creating the structure. Flagging or highlighting important or upcoming assignments eliminates the urgent response of missed or forgotten work. If your child does forget or miss an assignment it should be completed immediately along with adjusting the standard study schedule so no other assignments suffer. Set your own deadlines Even though each assignment comes with a built in deadline from a teacher students should work to set their own deadlines. These personal deadlines help prevent procrastination and allow for extra time in case an unseen event arises and your child needs more time to complete the work. Teachers will appreciate the effort students have put in to completing work in advance of the set deadline. Plan for review Your child should find time in the weekly study schedule for a brief review of previous coursework. It should cover all the work already completed and give your childan opportunity to look forward to future work. This review will help to remind students of what has been learned and how it connects to upcoming assignments. Find a friend There may be times that your child needs to study with peers or work on classroom assignments. Encourage your child to choose classmates with successful study habits. If youre concerned about your students ability to concentrate when it matters mostat school or during homework timedont wait to intervene. Luckily, there are many simple things you can do to help your child become a more focused and attentive student who is capable of handling challenging homework and school assignments. Here are six tips to support your child at home: Evaluate the basics: sleep and exercise. Children who do not get sufficient sleep each night may face a variety of problems, including an inability to focus. According to the National Sleep Foundation, adolescents ages 10-17 years old need 8.5-9.25 hours of sleep each night. Children ages 5-10 need 10-11 hours. Its also important for children to get plenty of exercise, another important factor in good sleep. Break down tasks into chunks. Many children get overwhelmed with larger projects or a lot of homework, causing them to become sidetracked when diving in. Teach your child to break down assignments into manageable parts and have him or her see each part through to completion. For example, if a student needs to read a book and write a report on it by Friday, write down the necessary steps for Monday through Thursday, and have him or her check them off as completed. Set a timer for each part to keep your child on track. Encourage organization. Being organized minimizes opportunities for a child to procrastinate or get off task. Help your child make use of a planner to keep track of homework and other obligations and his or her daily schedule. At home, establish a routine with set times for homework, friend time, bedtime and extracurricular activities. Its important to incorporate downtime into the schedule, too. Take breaks. Researchers have found that children who take exercise breaks during school are more attentive and on task than those who do not. When studying, have your child take 5- and 10-minute brain breaks to move around or take a quick walk up and down the street. Minimize distractions during homework. Make sure your home has a good study space. If your child studies in the kitchen, for example, make sure he or she isnt distracted by things like a television, a younger sibling playing noisily or a parent talking on the phone. If he or she studies in a bedroom, be sure all electronics are off. Work on task completion in day-to-day duties. At home, give your child clear direction on to-dos and make sure he or she completes each task before moving on to another. For example, when you get home from school, tell your child to wash hands and empty and put away his or her lunch box. Those tasks must be completed before moving on to anything else. As your child improves task completion (without frequent reminders), give him or her more complex, multi-step tasks. Consider a chore and rewards chart. As always, it is important to know your student and adapt to his or her learning style and preferences. Some students might focus better during study time by playing with a small stress ball, standing or pacing around the room, or talking through concepts or problems aloud. Pay attention to your childs needs and work with his or her teacher to accommodate those needs at home. It is a known fact that a pizza delivery guys car will reek of none other than pizza itself. Cologne/perfume only worsens the smell, and then soon your entire wardrobe and house will spread the aroma of cheese fries. Happy days. When working in the food industry, there will be long, awkward hours depending on the specific food spot. Fast food may be a full 24 hours, but a diner may only be open for five hours a day. It really depends. Working a double in this vocation is not as nice as the tips make it out to be (not that that says anything). Your feet ache, your heart aches because of the number of rude customers you have to serve, and your stomach aches because you just want to eat but you cannot stomach eating something else off of the menu that you have memorized. Welcome to food service. How long should I work in food service? Most probably assume that people only work in food service when it is their last possible option and every other door has been slammed in their face. You may also assume that it is only temporary, a part-time job at most while you are a full-time student, or parent. However, this is not always the case. Some prefer the food industry because they actually like it. They usually are fairly good with people, enjoy the fast pace, and can rely on shifts that they know they will be available for. A 9-5 is not for everyone anymore. Plus, the longer you stay with the company, like anywhere, the more benefits you will receive. For example, Publix starts a 401K for you immediately, and allows you to retire at an early age in comparison to other careers. For others though, being in the food service is strictly temporary, and they count the days until it is over (okay, not really). Whether you are a server, a cashier, or the chef in the kitchen, we appreciate you greatly because you provide us with joy: food. Do you actually learn? You may think that your intelligence is not tested when working in the food industry, but boy are you wrong. Your limits are pushed, and so are your reaction time and diligence. You have to learn the entire menu, dietary facts, and what happens to be on tap. Vital questions. Then, you have to learn if you can stay on your feet for hours on end with minimal breaks, deal with customers that did not take their happy pill that morning, and how to accept a bill when there is no tip attached to it. What you really learn that can apply to all aspects of life is how you can appreciate your future jobs. That you can go into the job with a positive mindset and truly be grateful that you have one in the first place. This way, you are not only catering food, but catering to your life. Wow, that was deep. Throw in that you are basically a genius when it comes to restaurant slang, including kitchen talk and waiter language, and you definitely have increased some of those IQ points of yours. So if you think this is a waste of a job opportunity, you are wrong. If anything, it only adds to your resume. If contemplating on whether the food service is for you and whether it would be a waste of time, hopefully you are aware of how helpful it can be. And also how terrible it can be. But hey, nothing is perfect. The job entails weird expectations, odd hours, and impromptu learning opportunities. So prepare to smell like food forever and you are fully ready to join the food force.
